One design, several files
Take Nature Backgrounds as the pattern. Each of its 16 scenes is a 3600 x 3600 square, two 16:9 files at 3840 x 2160 and 1920 x 1080, and one page in each PDF. That is 16 pictures, not 48. The wide files are cut from the square, so they show a narrower slice of it, and in a few scenes the stones and flowers along the bottom are gone.
Most of the art in this category was made with AI. The scene sets were generated at a smaller size and enlarged: the nature, plant, sunrise, mountain, ocean, park and aquarium sets, the ten storm scenes in the lightning set and most of the cherry blossom papers. A bigger file fills a bigger screen or sheet, but it doesn't add finer detail, so test one print before you go large. A few designs were built at full size instead: the three falling-petal cherry blossom papers, the Thanksgiving and horse patterns, which were laid out from separately made motifs, and the lightning patterns and overlays, which were drawn by code.
Three sets that look alike
Mountain Backgrounds keeps the peaks at the center of all 20 designs, with a lake, river or valley below and no people. Six are realistic, five are line art or soft washes and five are simple storybook color. In the nature set, mountains are only one setting among forest paths, beaches and meadows, and in Sunrise Backgrounds the low sun and its rays are the subject wherever they land.
Ocean Wallpapers and Aquarium Wallpaper are both water, seen from opposite sides of the surface. The ocean set looks at open sea and coastline from above it, breaking waves, sea stacks, a reef from high up and a moonlit path, with no fish, boats or people. The aquarium set is underwater, eight goldfish tanks and eight reef grottos with the fish already in every scene.
For a monitor, a laptop or a TV
Ten sets have 16:9 files, and they don't all work the same way.
- The ocean and aquarium sets were made wide. Their 3840 and 1920 files are the full scene and the square is the crop, so a fish near the edge can lose its tail, and the ocean squares push the iceberg in Polar Blue almost out of frame and lose most of the curving beach in Lagoon Arc.
- Plant Backgrounds and Nature Backgrounds go the other way: every wide file is a band cut from a square design.
- Lightning Backgrounds has wide versions of all ten storm scenes, framed to keep the bolt or the city in view. Four of them lose most of their mountains or sea, so use the square if you want the ground.
- Cherry Blossom Backgrounds and the mountain set each add four wide scenes that are separate pictures, not crops. The cherry blossom ones are benches under the trees and open windows; the mountain ones include a view through a wooden window frame and a stone terrace, both part of the picture.
- Cartoon Beach Backgrounds, Park Backgrounds and Horse Backgrounds each crop four of their 16 designs to 16:9. In the daytime beach coves the crop trims the beach more than the sky, and in the park's Fountain Garden it pushes the town skyline against the top edge.
The other four sets have no widescreen files. The only phone-shaped files on this shelf are four 1440 x 2560 wallpapers in the cherry pattern set. Everything here is a still image, and if you plan to use one behind a video call, check the framing first, since some apps mirror or crop the picture.
For printing
Every PDF puts one design on each page with white margins, so nothing prints edge to edge. On US Letter most squares come out about 8 inches across, a little smaller in the beach, park and cherry sets and 7.5 inches in the Thanksgiving and horse sets. Aquarium pages are landscape, with a wide scene about 10.3 x 5.8 inches. For a full 12-inch square, print the 3600-pixel JPG on paper that size. Three sets leave some designs out of the PDFs: the cherry blossom and mountain wide scenes and the lightning overlays have no print pages.
The sunrise set is the one to pick for a frame. Four of its scenes also come as portrait files for an 11 x 14 or 16 x 20 inch frame, cut from the middle of the square. It has no widescreen or seamless files.
Dark designs use a lot of ink, especially the four midnight florals in Purple Flower Backgrounds, the lightning storm skies, the darker aquarium scenes and the deep blue seascapes. Purples can print bluer and pinks can shift, so print one page at Actual Size before running a whole set. The plant PDFs are also 10 percent brighter than the plant JPGs.
For scrapbook paper, cards and pattern fills
A seamless PNG tile repeats with no visible join when you set copies edge to edge at the same size, with no gaps or rotation. In the Thanksgiving, horse, cherry, purple, cherry blossom and beach sets the tiles are opaque, with the colored ground baked in, so they are papers to fill an area with, not cut-out clipart.
- Thanksgiving Backgrounds, the horse set and Cherry Backgrounds tile all 16 designs. The Thanksgiving set mixes ten turkey patterns with three small-turkey plaids and three plain or gradient papers, so a card can match front to inside. The horse patterns shuffle four cartoon horses with carrots, horseshoes, rosettes and stables, and four of them leave the horses out for a quieter matching paper. The cherry motifs are tiny, under an inch per pair at 12 inches, so a sheet reads like fabric; its separate larger-motif versions are smaller files that don't repeat.
- Purple Flower Backgrounds tiles its four ditsy prints, the lightning set its four patterns, the cherry blossom set its three falling-petal papers, and Plant Backgrounds its two houseplant designs.
- The beach set tiles its two shell patterns, but the shells sit in a cluster with plain ground around them, so a big fill looks like tidy blocks. It also has two note papers with open space for writing.
- The mountain set has a single tile, design 16 shrunk into a small vignette on wide ivory margins, so it repeats as rows of separate little scenes.
- The aquarium, nature, sunrise, ocean and park sets have no tiles.
The one transparent file type is in the lightning set: two bolts on a clear background, a forked strike and a long sheet of lightning, to lay over your own picture as a separate layer. If you want empty space to add your own subjects instead, the park set ends with four blurred, realistic lawns, one per season, whose lower halves are mostly plain grass, leaves or snow.
Picking by look
For florals, the cherry blossom set is soft pink sakura on branches, paths and lantern-lit evenings, the purple set runs from airy lavender to near-black grounds, and the cherry set is cute red cherries with gingham, bows and jam spoons. For skies, the lightning scenes share one blue-violet storm palette and the sunrise scenes share warm gold light. The nature set pairs eight realistic landscapes with eight storybook ones, the beach set is bright storybook coves, shells and waves, and the plant set packs monstera, palms, ferns and eucalyptus edge to edge. The park set's illustrated paths, benches and four empty playgrounds have nobody in them.
