Snowy peaks with a glacier flowing down to a turquoise lake, with three small wide previews of other mountain scenes at the right 1 / 5

Mountain Backgrounds: 16 Snowy Peaks, Alpine Lakes and Misty Valleys plus 4 Widescreen Scenes

Instant downloadJPG, PNG, PDF

Twenty invented mountain scenes built around the peaks, from a glacier lake and deep snowfields to a river valley in mist, autumn slopes and flat layered ranges at dusk. Sixteen are 3600-pixel squares that also fill the Letter and A4 PDFs, and four are separate widescreen views sized for a screen.

Snowy or rocky summits anchor all 20 of these mountain backgrounds, usually with a lake, river or valley below them, and nothing else competes for attention: no people, no text, and no buildings except the window and terrace in two of the screen views. That is the difference from the Nature Backgrounds on this site, where mountains are one setting among forests, coasts and meadows, and from the Sunrise Backgrounds, where the sun itself is the subject. All of them are AI-generated pictures of invented places, not photos of real locations.

Sixteen square scenes

The squares fall into three looks, and the PDFs follow the same order.

Realistic (01–06). A glacier spilling toward a turquoise lake with dark rocks in front. A river looping through a forested valley, seen from a high ledge with mist between the ridges. Jagged ridges glowing orange at sunset above a small lake. Deep snowfields and blowing snow under sharp peaks. An emerald lake ringed by pines and white wildflowers. Pink-lit summits above a waterfall that drops into a dark lake.

Line-art and soft-wash looks (07–11). Two are pale and airy on a cream ground: 07 in gray-blue lines with mist filling the valleys, 08 in terracotta and peach ridges fading into fog. The next three use softer, blended color. Snowy peaks reflect in a bright blue lake, autumn slopes in orange and red surround a winding turquoise river, and lilac-and-pink summits stand over a still lake.

Simplified storybook color (12–16). Layered blue-green ranges with a pale river running through them, a green meadow with a dirt path and pines, purple ridges at dusk mirrored in a lake, orange-lit peaks above sage hills and a stream, and a lakeside crowded with pines, boulders and yellow wildflowers under sunlit peaks. Design 16 is the most detailed of these five.

The four widescreen views

Designs 17 to 20 are separate pictures, not crops of the squares. One looks at snowy peaks and a lake through a wooden window frame. One is a stone terrace with a lounge chair and a potted olive tree, looking down a green valley to a lake. One is a calm lake at dawn with pink cloud and mist along the far shore, and one shows pale blue-gray ridges fading into mist over still water. The window frame and the terrace are part of the artwork, so they stay on your screen. Each view comes at 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160, the same picture twice, and none of the four has a square or print version.

Design 16 as a repeating tile

The PNG is the only file meant for tiling. It holds design 16 shrunk into a vignette with ragged edges and wide ivory margins, so repeating it gives rows of separate little mountain scenes on an ivory ground rather than one continuous range. The square JPG of 16 is the full-bleed version of the scene. None of the other squares repeat cleanly, and START-HERE.txt notes that the ivory may shift slightly in tone where tiles meet.

Sizes and printing

The scenes were generated at 1254 pixels square, or 1672 x 941 for the screen views, and then enlarged. The 3600-pixel squares and the 3840 x 2160 files are bigger, not more detailed. The square JPGs carry 300 dpi in their settings, which comes to 12 x 12 inches, and START-HERE.txt advises a test print before going that large.

In the PDFs each page shows one complete square with white space above and below, a small header with the design number, and the scene’s name underneath. At Actual Size the picture prints 8 inches wide on US Letter and about 7.8 inches on A4. For a 12-inch print, use the square JPG instead.
