This book moves from the open ocean to the shore. The first pages are big sea animals: a whale, a dolphin, a sea turtle, an octopus, a shark and an orca. Then it gets smaller and stranger with a seahorse, a jellyfish, a lobster, a hermit crab, a pufferfish and a manta ray. Seals, a penguin, a pelican and a mermaid come next, and the last stretch heads to the beach with a lighthouse, a sailboat, a pirate ship, a treasure chest, a sandcastle, a beach ball, a surfboard and a snorkel mask.
What the pages look like
Every page has one subject drawn with a thick, even outline and a lot of white space around it. Only a few pages add scenery, like clouds behind the seagull or waves under the sailboat, so a young child can usually finish a page in one sitting. Older kids and adults who like simple, calm coloring can add their own water, sand or bubbles around the edges.
Good times to pull it out
Print a handful before a car trip, a rainy afternoon or an ocean unit at school. Because it’s a PDF, you can print the octopus three times if three kids all want the octopus.
Printing
Plain printer paper works for crayons and colored pencils. For markers, a heavier paper or light cardstock keeps the ink from bleeding through. Print at 100% so the outline stays inside the page border.
