In this set of sun and moon coloring pages, the pair never just hangs in an empty sky. Each of the 30 drawings works a radiant sun and a crescent moon into a detailed scene: painted on a galleon’s sails, set into the dial of a grandfather clock, carried on the wings of a moth or tucked into the branches of a pear tree. Most of the suns and moons have calm faces, and the moons usually have their eyes closed.
Where the sun and moon turn up
- Places, 8 designs: a garden gate (01), a domed observatory tower (05), a lantern-lit courtyard with a round moon gate (08), a castle bridge over a river (12), a pavilion on a giant lotus (20), a glasshouse full of ferns (23), a staircase climbing through clouds (26) and a curtained stage with sun and moon statues (30)
- Objects, 10 designs: a sailing ship (02), a grandfather clock (04), a teapot and teacups (09), a study with a telescope and globe (10), an open book beside a candle (11), a weaving loom (22), two hot air balloons over a river village (27), a harp (25), two crossed keys over a jewelry box (28) and a pair of hanging sun and moon hoops with feathers and crystals (29)
- Animals and plants, 11 designs: a moth (03), a tree with roots around a small waterfall (06), two koi (07), a pear tree with a ladder (13), a fox curled on a crescent (14), a whale (15), a dragon among peonies (16), a peacock (17), a bear asleep inside a crescent (18), two camels in tasseled blankets (19) and a pile of seashells (24)
- A medallion, 1 design: the sun’s face and the moon’s face side by side in a round frame (21)
These are decorative pictures, not astronomy. The notes that come with the set describe the faces, colors and settings as celestial fantasy, so there are no planets, orbits or moon phases to learn.
How the drawings sit on the page
Every drawing is portrait, placed in the middle of a landscape sheet with wide white margins on both sides. On US Letter the artwork measures about 5.9 × 7.3 inches, and on A4 about 5.7 × 7.1 inches. The lines are fine and the fill-ins are small: petals, scales, scrollwork, beads, stars and tassels run through nearly every design. Pages such as the medallion (21), the moth (03) and the hanging hoops (29) float on white, while others, like the koi and the camels, sit inside a drawn border.
The color references
The color page right after each drawing uses warm golds for the suns, with teal, blush pink and lavender around them. A few are night scenes in deep blue, the camels and the crossed keys among them. They’re only suggestions. To print only the coloring pages, choose the odd-numbered pages, at Actual Size with the paper turned landscape.
Questions
- Why are there four PDFs?
- Each paper size is one 60-page book split into two files, designs 01 to 15 and designs 16 to 30. US Letter and A4 hold the same 30 designs, so you only need the two files for your paper.
- How do I print only the coloring pages?
- Print the odd-numbered pages. The page after each drawing is its color reference, and the page numbers run 1 to 60 across both files.
