The workbook is built around one row per character. Each row starts with the pinyin, meaning, index number, stroke count and radical, then gives nine boxes: a solid model, two pale gray copies to trace over, and six empty boxes to write from memory before checking against the model. Twelve rows fill a page. All characters are simplified, and the pinyin carries tone marks.
How the levels are split
| Level | Characters with a practice row | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 168 | 9–23 |
| HSK 2 | 108 | 24–33 |
| HSK 3 | 192 | 34–50 |
| HSK 4 | 204 | 51–68 |
| HSK 5 | 192 | 69–85 |
| HSK 6 | 84 | 86–93 |
The first page of each level is a spotlight on a single character (吃 for HSK 1, 猜 for HSK 6) with every stroke drawn in order and named, a note on how the parts fit together, and a line of tracing. Levels 1 to 3 hold the most practice, and the plan suggests stopping there if time is short: 468 characters in six weeks.
Before you start writing
Three pages set up the basics: eight stroke order rules with the common traps, the 24 basic strokes with a red dot where each stroke begins, and 48 radicals with an example character each. The 12-week plan works out to one page a day in about fifteen minutes, split into review, new characters and a quick self-test from the pinyin index.
Using the indexes
The master table lists all 1,937 characters with a box to check, colored along the top by level. The pinyin, stroke-count and radical indexes cover the same set. Cover the characters in the pinyin index and you have a dictation test.
Printing
Print at 100% or actual size, since fit to page shrinks the grid until the cells are no longer square. The writing area measures the same in the US Letter and A4 files; only the margins change. Black and white on plain copier paper is enough. The five blank sheets at the back (large and standard tián grid, mǐ grid, plain grid and a small copying grid) print on their own whenever you need more room.
Questions
- Does every character have its own practice row?
- No. 948 characters get a guided row. The rest of the 1,937 appear in the master table and the three indexes, where you can look them up and check them off, and you can practice them on the blank grid sheets.
- Which HSK list are the levels based on?
- The book groups its characters under HSK levels 1 to 6 as a writing order, from the most frequent characters at HSK 1 to advanced vocabulary at HSK 6. If you need the exact exam list, check it against the current HSK syllabus.
