HSK Hanzi Copybook (2,663 Characters)

Instant downloadPDF

Every one of 2,663 simplified characters gets its own row to trace and write, filed under HSK levels 1 to 6 by the older HSK 2.0 word lists. Pinyin is printed in a different color for each tone, so you can hear the character before you write it.

All 2,663 simplified characters in this copybook get their own practice row, with none skipped. A row has ten tián-grid boxes. The first is the model, the next three are printed in pale gray for tracing, and the last six are empty. That makes nine repetitions per character. To the left of the boxes sit the index number, the pinyin with its tone number, a short English meaning, the radical and the stroke count.

How the characters are sorted

Characters are filed by HSK level, using the HSK 2.0 word lists from 2012, and each one appears only at the first level where it shows up.

Level New characters Sheets
HSK 1 174 14
HSK 2 173 14
HSK 3 270 21
HSK 4 447 35
HSK 5 621 48
HSK 6 978 76

A new HSK syllabus was published in November 2025 and has been in use since July 2026, so these levels won’t line up with the current exam lists. As a writing order it still holds up: the book starts with everyday characters and basic strokes at HSK 1 and ends with advanced and idiom characters at HSK 6.

Tone colors

Each of the four tones and the neutral tone has its own color, and every pinyin syllable in the book is printed in the color of its tone. A page near the front walks through mā, má, mǎ, mà and ma and has you trace five characters, one per tone.

Pacing

At 13 characters a sheet, one or two sheets a day is the pace the book suggests, and the practice log at the back has a box for every sheet. The 12-week plan spreads the levels over six two-week blocks; doubling each block gives a gentler 24-week plan.

Printing

Print single-sided on US Letter or A4. The inner pages are light on ink, and the book recommends 100 gsm paper or heavier. A laminated sheet can be used with a dry-erase marker.
