This butterfly SVG collection is 30 decorative butterflies in near-black ink on a transparent background. Every one is seen from above with its wings spread flat, and none has a cartoon face, so the set reads more like engraving or lace than like kids’ clipart. Five of the designs also come in blue or green.
Six families of wings
The file names sort the designs into groups, and each group has its own look:
- Silhouettes (01–06): large solid wing areas broken up by white spots and bands, filed as swallowtail, morpho, admiral, lacewing, copper and comma.
- Filigree (07–12): wings packed with acanthus scrolls, paisley, leafy vines, round rosettes or feathers, plus one Art Nouveau design with long curling tails.
- Cute (13–17): rounder wings filled with blossoms, hearts, daisies, tiny stars and crescents, or flower buds.
- Geometric (18–21): layered lotus petals, faceted crystal shapes, a sunburst, and pointed arches like a cathedral window.
- Layered (22–26): open outline butterflies with veined wings and spotted borders. These are the five with color versions.
- Floral (27–30): one butterfly whose wings are built from roses, and three where a butterfly sits above peonies, wildflowers with ferns, or magnolias.
What changes in the cut folder
The detail folder is the drawing as it is meant to look in print. The cut folder holds a second copy of every design where thin lines are thickened and many small openings are filled in, so each butterfly becomes a stencil-like shape with fewer, bigger holes. How much changes depends on the design. The silhouettes look almost the same in both folders. The filigree wings lose most of their fine dots and inner curls. In the three flower arrangements the engraved shading on the petals is gone and the blooms turn into solid black shapes.
So the cut versions are the ones to load into cutting software, and the detail versions are the ones to print. The guide suggests using a cut file at 10 inches wide or larger, trying your material first, and keeping transfer material on hand for small detached pieces. These files haven’t been tested on a cutting machine.
The color butterflies
Designs 22 to 26 come in color as well as black and white: 22 and 26 in two different greens, 23, 24 and 25 in blue. Each uses four flat colors, a dark slate outline, a strong shade on the forewings, a paler one on the hindwings and cream spots, and each color sits in its own group in the SVG and on its own layer in the DXF. There is no color cut version. For cutting, these five use the same one-color cut file as the rest.
Sizes
Each SVG and EPS opens at 10 inches across its longest side, and the DXF files are set in inches. The PNGs are 3600 pixels on the long edge with 300 dpi metadata, which works out to 12 inches at that resolution. For a small printed piece like a mug design around 3 to 4 inches wide, the guide points you to the detailed PNG or vector file rather than the cut version.
