One kind of engine runs through the whole set: an old-fashioned steam locomotive with a tall smokestack, a bell on top, a cowcatcher at the front and rows of large spoked driving wheels. Most pull a coal tender, and later pages add passenger carriages, freight wagons and a log car. The pages are portrait, and the drawings have no title or page number printed on them, so the whole sheet is picture.
Where the trains go
Pages 01–08 keep the scenery open: a little engine on a meadow line, a close side view with the driver waving from the cab, the front of the engine pulling into a country station, a wagon of fruit, spring blossoms, and a snowy curve with birds in the trees.
Pages 09–16 add more around the train: passengers with suitcases on a platform, a stone arch bridge over a river with a sailboat, a tunnel mouth in the mountains, carriages beside a lake with ducks, a windmill and sheep, a deer in a forest, a crane loading logs, and a postman with mail sacks at the mail train.
Pages 17–24 are the detailed ones: an engine shed with a water tower, a rail yard seen from above with crates and a signal, two children picnicking beside the line, an autumn train hauling pumpkins past a barn, a coastal track with a lighthouse, a moonlit run under the stars, a station festival with balloons and bunting, and a long train on a viaduct with a hot air balloon in the sky.
Printing
The line art and the color references are in separate books, so you can print the 24 outlines straight through without the colored pages. The guide suggests black-and-white mode for the outlines, borderless printing turned off, and Actual Size on whichever paper size you use. Single PDFs of each outline are there too, for reprinting one favorite.
