Written for adult beginners working toward HSK 1, the handbook holds 300 entries, laid out six to a page and grouped by word class: 104 nouns, 76 verbs, 30 adjectives, 20 pronouns, 24 adverbs, 14 measure words, 16 numbers and 16 particles. The characters are simplified.
What each entry gives you
The headword is set large enough to see the strokes, with its pinyin and a small line that draws the tone. Next to it are the radical and stroke count, a short meaning, one full sentence in characters, pinyin and English, and a “hook” that explains how the character is put together. For 家 the hook points out the roof radical with a pig beneath it. Three dots mark how often a word turns up in HSK 1 material, which helps you decide what to learn first. A ruled strip down the outer edge of every entry page is left for copying the character by hand.
Where the list comes from
The book says it plainly on page 4: 150 of its words are the older HSK 1 list, and the other 150 were compiled from common beginner vocabulary to reach the 300-word count of the new standard. The current syllabus, published in November 2025 and in use from July 2026, does set HSK 1 at 300 words, but the two lists are not the same. Use this book to learn and review; use the syllabus itself to check coverage before test day.
The back of the book
The writing section picks out 60 characters worth learning by hand. Each gets a ruled grid, two gray models to trace, its radical and its stroke count. After that come a pinyin index, a character index with the 60 writing characters in red, a four-week plan at fifteen new words a day, and a tracker with one square per entry.
Printing
Entries sit in a regular grid, so a page printed single-sided can be cut into six cards, and the class color and catalog number stay on each card. Keep the print scale at 100% and leave the fit-to-page option unchecked. The class colors appear only on small chips and edge tabs, which keeps the pages light on ink.
Questions
- Is this the word list from the current HSK 1 syllabus?
- Not word for word. The 2025 syllabus sets HSK 1 at 300 words, and this book also has 300. About half of its list is the older 150-word HSK 1 list; the rest is common beginner vocabulary chosen by the author, so some syllabus words are missing and some extra ones are in. Check it against the syllabus before you rely on it for the exam.
- Simplified or traditional characters?
- Simplified, with pinyin tone marks on every headword and example sentence.
