Thirty prehistoric animals take turns on these cards, drawn as round-cheeked baby dinosaurs in pastel pink, mint, butter yellow, sky blue and lilac. Each page is cream with a wavy mint-green edge and soft color blobs in the corners, and a little T-Rex, Triceratops, Pteranodon and long-necked dinosaur stand on a grassy hill above the grid.
The 30 on the list
Most of the famous names are here: T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Velociraptor, Spinosaurus and Ankylosaurus. Then come less familiar ones: Microraptor, Oviraptor holding an egg, Gallimimus, Kentrosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Allosaurus, Iguanodon and Brontosaurus. Not everything on it is a dinosaur in the strict sense. Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus were flying reptiles, and Mosasaurus and Plesiosaurus lived in the sea, which gives a child who knows the difference something to point out.
How the pool plays
A card shows 24 of the 30 animals, so six are missing from every board, and each animal lands on 34 to 43 of the 50 cards. Callers pull from 30 cards, each with the picture and the name, so the labeled and picture-only boards can be mixed at the same table.
The 30-card set covers up to 30 players and the 50-card set up to 50, one card each. The two sets don’t share a single layout, so a group that plays twice can switch sets for the second round and everyone gets a new card.
