Forty real things from the night sky and from the history of spaceflight fill these cards. There is the Sun with all eight planets and our Moon, star types such as a red giant, a white dwarf, a pulsar and a supernova, the Milky Way and Andromeda, and five constellations: the Big Dipper, Orion, Cassiopeia, Scorpius and Lyra. The spacecraft are ones people actually built, including a Saturn V rocket, the space shuttle, the Hubble telescope and a Moon rover.
Picture bingo that teaches the names
The cover page says “40 space pictures to learn”, and the labeled cards are how that happens. Each picture has its name printed underneath, so a child who hears “white dwarf” called can find the words on the card and match them to the drawing. The picture-only cards leave the names off for players who can’t read yet. Every calling card carries the name either way, so whoever is calling can read it out and hold it up.
Each card is a five-by-five grid, 24 pictures around a blue free space in the middle. With 40 pictures in the pool, a card shows a little over half of them. Any one picture turns up on somewhere between 24 and 41 of the 50 cards, so a called planet is often missing from your card, and nobody can count on covering a square with every draw.
One set of 50
This game comes as a single 50-card set in both versions, with no 30-card file. The cover marks it for ages 3 to 10. Cards print one per page, on a pale blue page inside a wavy orange border, and cardstock gives you boards that survive a second game night.
Questions
- Is Pluto on the cards?
- No. The 40 pictures include the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets, but not Pluto.
- Is there a smaller card set?
- No. This game comes as one 50-card set. For a smaller group, print only as many cards as you have players.
