This Christmas left right game is built around one story with a plot. In Santa’s Mixed-Up Christmas Eve, the Wish Gift, a little wooden music box, rides out of the workshop in an empty market basket after a gust blows through the open window. Santa and Rudolph track it past the reindeer barn, a snowy forest, a gingerbread village and a Christmas market, then fly it to a sleeping village in time for Christmas morning. Each of those places gets its own illustrated page.
How the passing works
Everyone sits in a circle holding one wrapped gift. The host reads, and each time the story says LEFT or RIGHT, every gift moves one seat that way. The main story also hides two DOUBLE cues, DOUBLE LEFT and DOUBLE RIGHT, which mean two seats at once. The host guide asks the reader to say those as one phrase and wait until the two-seat move is finished. When the host says “The end,” the gift in your hands is yours.
The 8-scene story has 91 LEFT and RIGHT cues and the quick round has 43, so the main story makes a long round and the short one fits a busy office party. In the host copies the cues are printed in color with a small arrow, which makes them easy to see while reading aloud.
After the presents stop moving
The three card decks are for the rest of the party:
- Gift swap. Agree beforehand to one extra round, draw a single card, and follow it: swap with the person across from you, everyone passes left, keep your gift, or “Santa decides.”
- Santa Says. A seated version of the classic, with actions like ringing an imaginary bell or walking like a penguin. Nobody is out.
- Christmas challenge. Name three Christmas foods, hum a Christmas tune, invent a new cookie. Players can skip any card or ask the group for help.
Printing
The printing guide suggests 20 to 32 lb paper for the story pages and 74 to 92 lb cover cardstock for the cards and tags. Print at 100%, then measure one card before cutting the rest, since the cards should come out 3.5 x 5 inches. Print only one story for the host, and punch the small circle on each tag for ribbon.
Questions
- How many people can play?
- The host guide plans for a circle of 6 to 20 players, each holding one wrapped gift, plus one host who reads.
- What do the player copies do?
- They are the same story without the highlighted cues, for guests to read after the game. The printing guide says to keep them back until the passing is over.
