Twenty owls as clean black shapes, from a heart-faced barn owl and a slim long-eared owl to an owl swooping with its talons out, a sleepy round owlet and an owl sitting in a crescent moon. Each comes as a solid silhouette, an outline and a square stencil with the owl bridged to its frame.

These 20 owls are clean black shapes. Inside each silhouette only a few things stay open, mostly the eyes, the beak and the pale face of the barn owl, so they read clearly at small sizes. Every design is supplied three ways: as a solid silhouette, as an outline and as a square stencil sheet.

Eight kinds of owl

The first eight designs are portraits of different owls. A horned owl perches on a branch with its ear tufts up (01). The barn owl (02) stands tall with its heart-shaped face and pale front, the snowy owl (03) is round-headed with no tufts, and the long-eared owl (04) is a very slim, upright shape topped by two tall tufts. The burrowing owl (05) stands on long bare legs. The little owl (06) and the tawny owl (07) are seen side-on, the tawny with its pale facial disc, and the scops owl (08) sits on a thin twig.

Flight, sleep and company

Four designs show owls moving: wings spread wide from the front (09), gliding past in profile (10), coming in to land with the wings raised and the feet forward (11) and swooping with the talons out (20). Design 12 perches and looks back over its shoulder.

The rest have a softer, rounder style. Design 13 is a round owl asleep, its closed eyes drawn as two curves, and 14 is a fluffy owlet with huge eyes. A parent and an owlet share a branch in 15, and two owls lean their heads together on another branch in 16. Design 17 sits an owl in the curve of a crescent moon, 18 frames one inside the oval opening of a tree hollow, and 19 is a front-facing owl head with large, angled eye openings.

Silhouette, outline and stencil

The silhouette is the filled black shape. The outline traces the same edge, plus the eyes and beak, as thin closed rings with nothing filled in. The stencil puts the owl inside a black square frame and joins it to the frame with thin, straight horizontal bridges. You keep the black and cut out the white, so in the stencil the open eyes become holes and the barn owl’s face turns into one heart-shaped opening.

Sizes and pages

All three versions use an 8 x 8 inch canvas. The owls reach about 6.7 inches at their longest, and the stencil frame is about 7.5 inches square. In the full-page PDFs on US Letter the tall owls print about 6.2 inches high and the stencil square about 7 inches across. The four- and six-per-page sheets mix different owls, so a single sheet gives you a small set of different designs rather than copies of one. START-HERE.txt asks you to print at Actual Size / 100%.

Questions

Which parts of the stencil get cut away?
The white parts. START-HERE.txt and the cover page of each stencil PDF say to keep the black owl and the square frame, cut out the white spaces and leave the outer square and the thin bridges intact. In every stencil file the owl, its bridges and the frame form one connected piece. Test your material and blade settings first.
Do the four- and six-per-page PDFs repeat the same owl?
No, they group different designs. The four-per-page files fit all 20 owls on five pages, and the six-per-page files use four pages, with designs 19 and 20 on the last one. Every PDF opens with a short cover page of printing notes.
