These ocean fuse bead patterns cover 30 different animals, and they read like a field guide drawn in pixels: an orca, a blue whale, a dolphin, a whale shark, a reef shark, a manta ray, a sea turtle, then a long run of smaller things from the reef and the tide pool. Every creature has a dark navy outline and flat, bright fills, and several get a small smiling face, including the octopus, crab, jellyfish, sea star, sea urchin and anemone.

Who’s in the sea

  • Big swimmers: orca, blue whale, dolphin, whale shark (seen from above), reef shark, manta ray and sea turtle.
  • Arms and claws: octopus, squid, jellyfish, seahorse, crab, lobster and shrimp.
  • Shells and spiny things: sea star, sand dollar, sea urchin, scallop, an open pearl oyster, conch and nautilus.
  • Reef life: sea cucumber, sea anemone, branching coral and a purple-and-teal nudibranch.
  • A few more: seal, penguin, clownfish, blue tang and butterflyfish.

Medium-size pieces

None of these is a giant. The biggest grid is the blue whale at 51 by 30 squares, the tallest are the whale shark and seahorse at 44 rows, and the smallest is the butterflyfish at 445 beads. The sand dollar is the bead-heaviest at 1,137. Colors stay simple too, from 4 on the sea star to 10 on the jellyfish, anemone and butterflyfish. With standard 5 mm fuse beads such as Perler, the blue whale comes out about 10 by 6 inches (25.5 by 15 cm); with 2.6 mm mini beads it’s about 5.2 by 3.1 inches. Perler did not make these patterns, and Doodlora Studio is unaffiliated with any bead brand. Building all 30 takes 21,928 beads.

Which chart to print

The two reference PDFs show each creature as one large counted grid on its own page, with the HEX colors and how many beads of each you need. Use them to choose a creature and gather beads; they are not drawn at bead size.

When you’re ready to build, switch to the placement PDFs. These print at true 5 mm or 2.6 mm spacing, first as color tiles and then again as black-and-white letter tiles, and the larger animals are split into tiles that name their exact rows and columns. Print at 100% with fit-to-page off and measure the 50 mm calibration line before you set a pegboard over the sheet. START-HERE notes that 2.6 mm is the spacing these sheets use, not a promise that every mini board matches, so check yours.

Letters are local to each creature, so A in the orca is not A in the crab. The HEX values are screen references rather than any maker’s color numbers. An adult should handle the iron, and keep the beads away from children under 3.

Questions

Which creatures fit on a single sheet?
At 2.6 mm pitch every one of the 30 prints on one page. At 5 mm, the octopus, scallop, penguin and butterflyfish fit on one tile; 15 others take two tiles and the largest 11, such as the orca, whale shark and sand dollar, take four.
Do I need white beads?
Yes, for most of them. Pale gray squares are empty and get no bead, but white squares that carry a letter are white beads, like the eye patch and belly on the orca.
