Nine activities fill this 14-page Halloween pack, and all of them take place in one witch’s shop at the edge of an autumn forest. Mia, a young witch in a plum dress and pointed hat, runs the shop with her black cat Clover. A small brown owl named Olive and a forest goblin named Pip drop in too. The story is about getting ready for an autumn festival, and the pages stay warm and friendly, with pumpkins, mushrooms and potion bottles rather than anything spooky.
The nine activities
- Magical Shop I Spy. Find and count 5 pumpkins, 4 potion bottles, 3 mushrooms, 2 wands and 1 black cat in the shop scene.
- Potion Word Search. Ten words, including CAULDRON, PUMPKIN and SPELL, hide in the grid, and some of them read upward or right to left, not only across, down and diagonally.
- Who Stole the Magic Wand? Four suspects and five clues about boot prints and a green thread. Kids cross out who it can’t be and write down the thief. The page promises the thief is a friendly one.
- Five design pages. Invent a potion, a witch hat, a magic wand, your own magical shop and a spell. Each has a few lines to fill in and a big space to draw.
- Save the Magic Shop! A 24-space board game with shortcuts, a lost cat and potion trouble along the way. The tokens are on the same page.
Before the activities
The opening pages introduce the four characters, tell the story of the shop and picture the 20 objects that turn up in the puzzles. They set the scene for kids who like a story first. If you only want the puzzles, print just the activity pages.
Printing
Both files hold the same 14 pages. Print at actual size, not fit to page. The pages keep a 0.45-inch margin, so home printers that can’t print to the edge won’t cut anything off. They also stay readable in black and white. Slightly heavier paper is nicer for the coloring and drawing pages.
Questions
- Is there an answer key?
- No. The word search has ten words in a 14-by-14 grid, and the mystery's five clues rule out three of the four suspects, so both can be checked at the table.
- What else do I need for the board game?
- A die, since the rules say to roll and move, plus scissors for the player tokens printed on the same page.
