Orca Outlines and Silhouettes with Layered Black-and-White Cut Files, 20 Designs

Instant downloadSVG, DXF, PNG, PDF

Twenty orcas, from a spyhop and a tail slap to a pod of three and a swimmer under a crescent moon. Every design comes three ways, as a plain silhouette, as an outline with the eye patch and saddle drawn in, and as a two-layer file with the black body and the white markings kept apart.

Orca markings are what make the animal, so these twenty designs come in three versions instead of two. The solid file is the plain dark shape of the whale. The outline traces the body and also draws in the eye patch, the saddle patch and the white belly. The layered file keeps the black body and the white markings as separate parts, ready to cut from two colors and stack.

Twenty poses and scenes

  • Swimming side-on: a cruising male with a tall dorsal fin (01), a swimming female (02), a young calf (14) and an orca gliding at the surface over wavy lines (15).
  • Leaping, diving and rolling: a leap (03), a spyhop with the head straight up (04), a tail slap with drops of water flying (06), a dive (09) and a belly roll (10).
  • Seen from odd angles: from directly above (11), from underneath with the belly showing (12), curving into a C (13), coming straight at you (16) and in a departing view (17).
  • More than one orca: a mother and calf (05), a pod of three in shrinking sizes (07) and a pair circling each other (19).
  • Motifs: an orca over a curling wave (08), an angular faceted swimmer (18) and an orca under a crescent moon and two four-point stars (20).

How the layered version goes together

Each layered SVG has two groups, BODY-BLACK and MARKINGS-WHITE, and the DXF puts the same parts on layers named 01_BODY_BLACK and 02_MARKINGS_WHITE. Cut the body from black, cut the markings from white, then place the white pieces on top at the alignment they were drawn in. The white layer is several loose pieces, from four in the spyhop to fourteen in the pod and in the mother-and-calf design. The guide notes that real saddle patches can be gray, and this set makes them white to suit a two-color build.

Sizes and printing

Every design sits on an 8 x 6 inch canvas and fills up to about 6.8 inches across or 4.6 inches tall, depending on the pose. The PNGs are 2400 x 1800 pixels at 300 dpi. In the PDFs, a full page holds the orca in an area about 6.6 x 4.5 inches on US Letter, and both the four-up and six-up pages print it within about 3 x 2 inches, so six-up simply gives you more copies per sheet. Each page is headed with the design number and name.

These are decorative cut shapes, not bridged stencils, and they haven’t been through a physical cut test. Some outline pieces and white markings stand alone, and the smallest markings may need a larger size. For a quick, simple project, the guide points to the solid versions.

Questions

Can I edit the two layers in the layered PNG?
No. The layered PNGs are flattened black-and-white previews. For separate pieces, open the layered SVG, which has a BODY-BLACK and a MARKINGS-WHITE group, or the layered DXF, which has the same two parts on named layers.
Why does the white layer show up in cyan in my software?
The guide says the second DXF layer uses cyan only as an on-screen color. Those lines are the cut contours for your white material, not a white fill.
