Twenty-four pairs of sea creatures, drawn in soft blues and pinks with dark outlines, make up the full deck of this printable ocean memory game, and it goes well past the animals every ocean set has.
Three kinds of card
- The familiar ones: crab, dolphin, jellyfish, octopus, penguin, pufferfish, sea turtle, seahorse, seal, shark, starfish and whale. These twelve make up the smaller 12-pair set.
- The less expected ones: beluga, narwhal, dugong, manatee, sea otter, lobster, shrimp and squid.
- Birds and fish from the shore and the pond: pelican, seagull, goldfish and koi fish. The goldfish and koi are freshwater fish, so they’re the odd ones out in an ocean deck.
Why the full deck is harder
Several pairs look alike at a glance. There are three whales of sorts (the whale, the beluga and the narwhal), a dugong and a manatee, a seal and a sea otter, and a lobster, a shrimp and a crab. The 12-pair set leaves most of those look-alikes out. The how-to-play page puts it simply: fewer pairs for younger kids, more pairs for a bigger challenge.
Versions and printing
Each set comes with names printed under the pictures or without them, and in two layouts: 12 cards edge to edge with shared dashed cut lines, or 12 separate cards in blue rounded frames. Letter-size grid cards come out close to 2.5 inches square. Print on card stock so nothing shows through the back, and add the optional light blue card backs if you print double-sided.
