Every design here is a luna moth, drawn with feathered antennae, eyespots and the two long tails that trail from its hindwings. The set has 16 luna moth outline designs in two styles, a solid shape and an open outline, and those tails are what tie them together: they curl, stream behind a moth in flight or bend round to become a frame.

Sixteen ways to draw one moth

Six are front views with the wings spread. Design 01 has veins and four eyespots in a natural pattern, while 02 trims the veins back and curls the tails into hooks. Number 03 breaks each wing into angular, faceted panels, and 06 fills the wings with leaf shapes. Two add something around the moth: 04 sets a row of five moon phases above it, from crescent to full and back, and 05 places it inside an open wreath of leafy branches with two small flowers.

Three show the moth at rest from the side, holding a twig in 07, crawling over an oak leaf in 08 and clinging with its wings folded in 09.

The five silhouettes, 10 to 14, have no inner lines at all. They’re the moth reduced to its outline in flight: spread with sweeping tails, rising at an angle, gliding low, resting with its wings fanned upward and tipping into a dive with rippling tails.

Designs 15 and 16 are frames with an empty middle. In 15 the moth’s tails sweep down and round into a large oval, and in 16 the moth sits on top of a wreath of oak leaves and acorns.

Solid shape and outline, design by design

The two styles don’t change in the same way across the set. On the spread and resting moths, the solid version is a dark moth with its veins and eyespots cut out as pale lines, and the outline version turns every one of those areas into a narrow black band with open space inside. On the five silhouettes the solid is a single filled shape, and the outline keeps only its outer edge, so 10 to 14 become the plainest line drawings in the set. The oval frame changes least, since it’s mostly line already in both styles.

According to the guide, bridges connect nearby black parts in both styles, though the five moons in 04 stay as separate pieces. It suggests the simpler solid designs for small projects, because antenna teeth, leaves and other narrow details may need adjusting at small sizes. It also states that no physical cut has been tested, so try a small sample in your own material first.

Files and printing

SVG and PNG files share a 10 x 7 inch canvas, with the moths up to about 9 inches across and 5.9 inches tall on it. The guide notes that the canvas includes empty space, so measure the artwork rather than the canvas when sizing a project. The DXF files open in inches.

Both PDFs follow the same page order: solid moths on pages 1 to 20, outlines on pages 21 to 40. On US Letter a full-page moth prints about 7 inches wide. Print at actual size, because fit to page shrinks the artwork, and note that the heading and page number at the top of each sheet aren’t part of the design.

Questions

Do the name frames come with lettering?
No. Designs 15 and 16 leave a blank space under the moth. Type your own name or words into it in a vector editor, or print the frame and write in it by hand. No font files or editable text fields are included.
Why are there only 16 designs when the PDF has 40 pages?
Each PDF holds the 16 designs twice, once solid and once as outlines, and adds two four-up and two six-up sheets for each style. Those repeat sheets copy designs 01, 02, 10 and 11 and aren't new designs.
