These galaxy coloring pages leave the solar system behind. There isn’t a planet anywhere in the set. The 30 landscape pages cover the shapes galaxies take, clusters of stars, and the clouds of gas and dust where new stars form, and almost everything is drawn with tiny dots, rings and fine threads instead of closed outlines.

Page by page

  • Pages 1–11, galaxy shapes: spiral, barred spiral, edge-on with a dark dust lane, elliptical, lenticular and irregular, then a ring galaxy, two galaxies pulling out long tidal tails, a big spiral with small companions, a spiral of short patchy arms, and an edge-on disk inside its faint halo.
  • Page 12: our own galaxy from above, with a small pointer to the Sun.
  • Pages 13–15, star clusters: a loose open cluster, a dense ball-shaped globular cluster, and young stars still wrapped in their cloud.
  • Pages 16–23, nebulae: emission, reflection and dark nebulae, threads of gas with knots of new stars, towering pillars, an hourglass-shaped planetary nebula, the tangled shell of a supernova remnant, and a bubble blown by stellar winds.
  • Pages 24–25: two short labeled sequences, a cloud collapsing into a young star with a disk, and gas from old stars feeding new ones.
  • Pages 26–30: a group of elliptical galaxies, the cosmic web of filaments and empty voids, three nebula types side by side, the Milky Way’s band seen from inside, and a gallery of six galaxy shapes.

Coloring stippled pages

Shading here comes from how close the dots sit. The elliptical galaxy on page 4 and the globular cluster on page 14 are almost solid fields of small circles, and the dark nebula on page 18 sits on a speckled background. Filling each dot one by one isn’t realistic. Sweeping color across a region and letting the dots show through is how the color references are done, and it suits colored pencils or a light hand with markers.

The color references

Every color page keeps a plain white background, so there’s no black sky to fill. The first spiral gets blue and pink arms around a gold core, the nebulae run through coral, rose, blue and lavender, the planetary nebula is teal and the cosmic web is violet with gold knots. Each page also prints a title and one sentence, for example “A bar of stars crosses the center of a barred spiral.” US Letter and A4 hold the same designs, so pick the file for your paper and print it landscape at 100%.

Questions

Are these accurate pictures of real galaxies?
No. The start-here notes describe the shapes as educational interpretations, not maps of individual objects. Sizes, distances and star counts are simplified, the colors are artistic suggestions rather than calibrated science images, and the four-point star symbols are not the shape of a real star.
Do any pages have labels?
Five do. Page 12 points to the Sun's spot in the Milky Way, pages 24 and 25 name the stages in two small sequences, page 28 names three nebula types and page 30 names six galaxy shapes. The other 25 have only the title and one sentence at the top.
