Grown elephants with heavy, wrinkled legs, big ears and curled trunks make up most of these 20 elephant silhouettes. They are black papercuts rather than flat shapes: the skin folds, the edges of the ears, the eye and the toenails are left as pale cut lines. Each design is also supplied as an elephant outline.
Adults, calves and family groups
The African elephant (01) walks side-on with tusks and wide fan-shaped ears, and the Asian elephant (02) has a domed head and smaller rounded ears. Other adults raise the trunk high (05), let it hang straight down to the ground as if to drink (17), walk away from you with the head turned back over the shoulder (18), or carry a small bird on the back (19). Design 06 is a head seen from the front with the ears spread out like a fan. The calves are drawn younger and rounder: one trots with its trunk curled up (03), one sits facing you with its round footpads showing (09), and one sprays water from its raised trunk, with the drops as separate pieces (08).
The family designs are linked by trunks. In 04 a calf holds its mother’s tail, in 13 two calves face each other and their trunks meet in a heart, and in the walking herd (07) the first two elephants are joined trunk to tail while the smallest walks a step ahead on its own.
Patterns and three templates
Four designs swap the wrinkles for decoration. Design 10 is a blocky, faceted elephant with a few triangles cut out, 11 is filled with a mandala of petals and leaves, 12 holds a flower up in its trunk, and 20 is covered in daisies and leaves. The last three are templates: an oval footprint with four round toe marks across the top (14), a baby elephant drawn in dots for tracing (15) and a walking elephant with an empty rectangle in its side where a name could go (16). No lettering comes with it.
Papercut and outline
The papercut is the version with the character, and it is not a filled shape. The outlines have white insides with the lines drawn as narrow black filled shapes. Design 01’s outline is a detailed pen-style drawing, while the rest follow a simpler edge. The notes say the dotted and mandala details are meant for printing or larger projects and that small details need a bigger size. Nothing has been test-printed or test-cut, so try a sample in your material before a final piece.
Page sizes
On a full US Letter page the African elephant prints about 6.2 inches wide, about 3 inches on the four-up pages and about 2.4 inches on the six-up pages. The herd is a long, low strip, 6.2 by 2 inches on a full page. The SVG files sit on a 10-inch square canvas with the art reaching about 8.5 inches across.
Questions
- Do the outline versions keep the wrinkles and ear folds?
- Only design 01. Its outline is a detailed line drawing with ear folds, the eye, rings along the trunk and toenails. The other outlines follow a simpler edge with a few inner lines, and the front-facing head in 06 becomes an ear-and-trunk shape with no face. The geometric, mandala and botanical elephants keep their patterns in both versions.
- Can design 15 be cut out?
- Not as a single piece. It is a baby elephant drawn as a dotted line for tracing, about 400 separate dots, and the notes describe it as a tracing template rather than a cutting contour. Print it and trace or stitch along the dots.
