Wings carry most of the detail in this dragonfly silhouette set. In the outline version every wing is filled with a network of veins, with a small dark spot near each tip and a segmented body running down the middle. The silhouette version drops all of that and keeps just the edge, so the long body and four wings read as one clean black shape.

Twelve dragonflies in the air

Four designs are seen from directly above with all four wings spread (01, 05, 07 and 10), and in 05 and 10 the tail curves off to one side. The rest tilt and turn. There is a broad-winged glider, a slender dragonfly angled across the page, one banking upward, one diving head down with its tail in the air, two more cutting diagonally across the page (08 and 09), a side view with the long body stretched out, and one hovering. Design 09 shades its wings with tiny dots instead of drawing every cell.

Reeds, flowers and frames

The last eight bring in a setting or a second dragonfly. One perches on a grass stem beside a drooping seed head (13), and another clings to a tall reed with a cattail spike (14). Two designs pair dragonflies, face to face in 15 and one above the other in 16. In 17 a dragonfly flies over an open cosmos flower, and in 18 it skims a crescent of blooms, buds and feathery leaves. Design 19 sets a top-view dragonfly inside a thin circle with small flowers at its base, and 20 surrounds one with an open wreath of ferns and grasses.

The wing cutouts

Designs 01, 05, 07 and 10 come in a third version made for cutting. Each one is a single black dragonfly in which the wing cells are opened up as windows, with the veins left as the bridges between them. The guide’s advice is to use these at 8 inches wide or larger, test your material first, and take the SVG or DXF cutout files for the stencil itself, since the cutouts printed small in the PDFs are only previews. The fine-line outlines aren’t meant for this. They’re built from many separate lines and dots, close to 1,100 of them in the stippled design, which suits printing, coloring and plotting.

Two kinds of PDF

The main print PDFs give each design one page with a large outline across the top, roughly 7 inches wide for the spread designs, and the solid version, plus the cutout for the four that have one, in a smaller size underneath. The collection sheets are a separate supplement: 4-up pages pair the solid and outline of two designs side by side, then 6-up pages do the same for three, and each layout ends with the four cutouts.

For digital work, the SVG artboards are all 8 inches wide with the height following the drawing, so the tall reed design is the only one that runs longer than it is wide. The PNGs are 8-inch squares at 2400 pixels, and the DXF files use inches at the same scale as the SVGs. Print the PDFs at Actual Size or 100%.

Questions

Which version should I use for a stencil?
The four wing cutouts. Each one is a single connected shape with the wing cells opened up, and the guide recommends cutting them at 8 inches wide or larger and testing your material first. The fine-line outlines are made of many separate lines and dots, so the guide sends them to printing, coloring or plotting instead.
Are the solid silhouettes all different?
Mostly. A few designs differ mainly inside the wings, so their solid versions come out close. Design 07 looks much like 01, and 09 much like 08. Their outline versions are clearly different.
