Leaf-shaped feather openings run through the black body of every hen, rooster and chick in these chicken silhouettes, so each bird reads as a papercut rather than a flat shadow. The comb, wattle and eye are picked out the same way. All 20 designs also come as a plain outer outline.
Eight hens, two roosters, three chicks
Most of the set is single hens doing ordinary hen things. One stands side-on (01), one walks with a foot lifted (02), one bends to peck at the ground (03), and one settles down low as if on a nest (04). Design 05 tucks her head in to preen, 06 puffs up into a round ball of feathers, 07 lifts one wing and 08 faces you straight on. The two roosters have long sickle tails: 09 crows with his head up and 10 struts with one foot raised. The chicks are rounder and fluffier, one standing (11), one pecking (12) and two side by side (13), one up and one sitting down.
Families, a nest and the farmyard
Design 14 pairs a hen with a single chick at her feet, and 15 has a hen walking ahead of three chicks in a line. In 16 a hen sits on a woven nest with three eggs showing at the front. Design 17 is a rooster standing on a weathervane, arrow and post included. Design 18 swaps the feathers for five-petal flowers and leaves, 19 puts a hen beside a small barn with its doors open, and 20 sets a hen inside a plain round ring. Every single bird, the nest and the weathervane are each one connected shape, feather openings and all. The extra chicks, the barn and the ring are separate pieces, so keep a group together when you resize it.
What the papercut keeps and the outline drops
The outline version is the outer edge only, drawn as a narrow filled band with the inside left open. That works well for the single birds, where the bumpy, feathery edge still reads clearly as a hen or rooster. It loses more on the busy designs: the nest, eggs and flowers vanish, and in 19 the barn becomes a plain house shape with a strip of planks left on one side. Choose the papercut when the inside pattern is the point, and the outline for something simple to trace or color. Neither version has been cut on a machine, so make a small test in your own material first.
One page, both versions
Each PDF page holds one design twice, the papercut at the top and the outline below, about 3.6 inches across each on US Letter. The SVG canvas is 10 inches square and the birds fill up to about 8.5 inches of it, which is the size to start from for anything bigger than the printed page.
Questions
- Are any of the designs in color?
- No. Every file is a single black shape on a transparent or white background. The solid version is the papercut with feather openings and the outline version is a plain contour, so you add color yourself if you want it.
- Do the eggs, nest and flowers show in the outline version?
- No. The outline traces only the outer edge of each design. In 16 the hen and her nest merge into one rounded shape with no eggs or weave, and in 18 the flowers disappear and leave a plain hen. Use the solid files when you want that inside detail.
