Twenty cat heads make up this set of cat face outlines, each with the whole face drawn in: eyes, nose, mouth, whiskers and the fur around the cheeks. Eight look like real cats, eight are cartoon kittens with big expressions, and four wear something. Every design comes twice, as a solid black portrait with the features cut out and as an outline drawing.

Real cats, cartoon kittens, dressed-up cats

The realistic eight change the coat and the angle. Design 01 is a classic shorthair facing forward with a little smile, 02 turns to show its left profile and 03 gazes off at three-quarters. Number 04 tilts its head and has patchy markings, and 05 rests with its eyes closed. Three are about the coat and ears: a longhair with a full ruff around its face (06), a round-headed cat with folded ears (07) and a cat with tufted ear tips and striped markings (08).

The cartoon eight are all about the expression:

  • 09 a round face with big eyes and a small smile
  • 10 a wink
  • 11 a big-eared kitten looking up with its mouth in a little “o”
  • 12 a wide, low head with sleepy closed eyes
  • 13 fluffy, puffed-out cheeks
  • 14 wide eyes and an open mouth in surprise
  • 15 eyes squeezed shut in a big open laugh
  • 16 a playful grin with the tongue poking out

Four more add one thing each: a bow on one ear (17), a small crown between the ears (18), a five-petal flower by the ear (19) and a knotted scarf under the chin (20).

Solid portrait or outline

The solid files aren’t plain silhouettes. The head is black, and the eyes, nose, whiskers, inner ears and any white fur are cut out of it, so 04, 17, 19 and 20 read as two-tone cats with pale muzzles and chests. In the SVG and PNG those cut-out areas are transparent, which means the paper or fabric behind the design becomes the color of the face.

Outline files draw the same head as black lines on an open face, with the fur edge and every whisker traced. The PDF cover describes them as meant for coloring and tracing.

Before cutting or printing

On cutting, the guide is direct. Small eyes, inner ears and whiskers need a test cut in your own material, separate facial pieces may need transfer tape or assembling on paper, and none of the designs is a one-piece stencil. The outline versions break into more separate pieces than the solid ones, because each eye and whisker is its own shape.

In the SVG and PNG files each head sits on an 8 x 8 inch canvas and measures up to about 6.7 inches at its longest. Both PDFs open with a cover page and then run the solid heads full page, four per page and six per page, followed by the outlines in the same order. On a US Letter full page a head prints about 6.2 inches tall. Set the printer to Actual Size so nothing gets scaled.

Questions

Is the solid version a one-piece stencil?
No. The guide says these aren't one-piece stencil sheets. Small eyes, inner ears and whiskers are separate pieces in places, so they may need transfer tape or assembling on paper, and the guide asks for a test cut in your own material first.
Are the white parts of the solid heads transparent?
Yes. In the SVG and PNG files the eyes, whiskers, nose and white markings of the solid heads are open cutouts, so whatever sits behind the design shows through them.
