A dromedary has one hump and a Bactrian camel has two, and in these camel silhouettes the file name of every single camel says which kind it is. Ten designs are dromedaries, five are Bactrian camels and five are small desert scenes. Each one is supplied as a filled black shape and again as a camel outline that follows the same edge.

Smooth dromedaries, shaggy Bactrians

The dromedaries are lean and long-legged with a smooth edge. One stands square (01), one walks (03), one lies with its legs folded under (05), one trots (07), one stretches its neck out to browse (08) and one drops onto its front knees (09). Design 19 turns its head back over its body, and 10 is a leggy calf. The Bactrians stand (02), walk (04) and rest (06), and their edges turn ragged along the neck, humps and upper legs, which reads as a thick coat even in plain black. Design 20 is a Bactrian calf, with its two small humps kept clear enough to tell it from the dromedary calf.

Caravan, rider, palm and dunes

Designs 11 to 15 put the camels in a setting. Three dromedaries walk nose to tail in the caravan, a man sits on the hump in 12, a camel faces a palm tree in 13 and a mother lowers her head toward her calf in 15. In 14 a single camel crosses the top of a low dune, with a second dune and a crescent moon beside it. The caravan camels, the palm, the calf and the moon are separate shapes, so you can space them out or use them alone. In the caravan the tufted tail tips sit just off each camel as tiny separate dots.

Three head portraits

Designs 16 to 18 are cropped at the neck, so no hump shows. The dromedary profile has a long, curving neck, the front portrait looks straight out with both ears up, and the Bactrian head is framed by a heavy, shaggy mane. In the solid files these three keep the eye, ear and muzzle lines open in the black, and the Bactrian also has strands of its mane cut through.

How the outline is drawn

The outline is not a single stroke. It is a narrow closed band, about 1 mm wide when a design is 6 inches across, that runs around the silhouette and around the openings in the portraits. Thin legs, tail tufts, palm tips and the points of the moon are the fragile parts, and the notes suggest a larger size for them. Nothing in the set has been test-cut or test-printed, so try one sample in your own material first.

Page and canvas sizes

On a full US Letter page the standing dromedary prints about 6.8 inches wide. The four- and six-per-page sheets repeat one design across the page at about 3.3 inches wide. The caravan is long and low, 6.8 by 1.7 inches on a full page and under an inch tall on the multi-copy sheets. Page 1 of every PDF is a cover, so design 01 starts on page 2 and design 20 is page 21.

Questions

Which designs are Bactrian camels?
Five of them, 02 standing, 04 walking, 06 resting, 18 the head profile and 20 the calf. Every other camel in the set, including all the camels in the five scenes, is a one-hump dromedary.
Does the rider wear a costume or headdress?
No. The rider in design 12 is a plain seated figure in ordinary clothes, with short hair and no headdress, saddle blanket or tassels, and the figure is joined to the camel as one shape.
