A realistic rose and a butterfly share the frame in all 20 of these black-and-gray tattoo designs. The shading is soft and pencil-like, with layered petals, veined wings and dark leaves. Next to each shaded piece you get a black line trace of it and a solid silhouette of its outer shape.

How the twenty are composed

Several designs are built for a particular shape, and the file names say where it might sit. Design 05, the forearm vine, stacks two roses and buds on one long thorny stem. Design 06, the collarbone arc, runs sideways as a low spray of two roses with a butterfly resting on the right-hand bloom. The sternum design (07) is symmetrical, a butterfly with open wings above a rose, with small jewel drops hanging below.

Others lean on a symbol:

  • 11, crescent rose: a rose set into a crescent moon, with a butterfly on the moon’s tip and two four-pointed stars beside it
  • 12, heart vine: two thorny stems that curve into a heart, with a full rose at the top of one side and a bud and a butterfly on the other
  • 13, falling petals: a rose on a curving stem shedding three loose petals
  • 15, rose dagger: an ornate dagger with a rose and thorny stem wound around the blade
  • 16, diamond botanical: a rose and leaves inside a thin geometric diamond
  • 17, ribbon bloom: a rose with a ribbon looping down its stem

The rest are variations on the pairing. A butterfly perches on a rose (01), spreads its wings over a rose and bud (02), sits above a single rose on a long S-shaped stem (03) or beside one large open rose (04). Design 08 has a big, dark rose with a swallowtail, 09 swaps one of the butterfly’s wings for a cluster of roses, 10 is an open wreath of roses and leaves, 14 sends two butterflies over one rose, 18 has a swallowtail on a rosebud, 19 a three-rose bouquet and 20 an open-winged butterfly over a rose framed by scrolls and drops.

Shaded, traced and solid

The shaded artwork is the design itself. Those PNGs keep their original pixel sizes, most of them 1024 x 1536, so they work best as a reference image or at the size of the PDF page.

The line version was traced from the shading by software rather than drawn as clean outlines. It reads like an ink sketch, with flecks and short hatch marks where the gray tones were, and the SVG and DXF files hold those marks as closed shapes, not single strokes.

The silhouette fills everything inside the outer edge with black. Most designs become one solid piece. The stars in 11, the petals in 13 and the second butterfly in 14 stay separate, and the finer shapes like the dagger hilt and the drops in 07 and 20 still show along the edge.

Before you take one to your artist

The files aren’t mirrored. The print guide asks you to test the size on plain paper first, to mirror a design only once and only if your transfer method needs it, and to let your tattoo artist adapt the linework and make the final stencil. For a size of your own, start from the SVG or the transparent PNG rather than the PDF.

Every DXF opens exactly 4 inches wide, whatever the design’s shape, so the collarbone arc comes in under 2 inches tall while the rose dagger runs past 11 inches. Resize to the height you need after you open it.

What the PDF pages hold

Each PDF has 76 pages. The first 20 show one shaded design per page, as large as about 6 by 9 inches on US Letter for the tall ones, followed by five sheets with four different designs each. The line traces and the silhouettes repeat that pattern, and the last page is the print guide.

Questions

Is the line version a ready-made tattoo stencil?
No. The Read-Me describes it as an ink study derived from the shaded artwork by software, and the print guide says a qualified tattoo professional should adapt the linework and prepare the final stencil. Bring it to your artist as a reference for the outline.
Why is the silhouette of design 16 just a diamond?
A silhouette fills everything inside the outer edge. In design 16 the rose sits inside a thin diamond frame, so the frame becomes the edge and the whole inside turns solid black, with only a few leaves and the butterfly's wing poking out. Use the shaded or line version of that one if you want the rose to show.
