These alphabet and number tangram cards put every capital letter from A to Z and every digit from 0 to 9 into the seven classic pieces. The deck runs in order: 26 letter shapes first, then the ten numbers, then 44 picture shapes. Each one comes as an easy card with every piece in its own color, a challenge card with only the dark silhouette, and an answer card where white lines show each piece.
Letters and numbers are built differently
A tangram letter is not a solid silhouette the way a cat or a boat is. The how-to-play page explains it: on the easy card for a letter or number, some pieces sit a little apart so the letter stays readable, and O, B and P keep an open hole in the middle. Children copy the picture on the card rather than pushing every piece edge to edge. Each letter card also prints the letter in large type with the words “Letter A, build the letter,” and each number card spells the number out, from zero to nine.
The 44 picture shapes
| Group | Shapes |
|---|---|
| Objects | lamp, house, tree, car, sailboat, airplane, rocket, balloon, teapot, cup, candle, key, shirt, gift |
| Land animals | elephant, giraffe, camel, kangaroo, rabbit, bear, fox, cat, horse, squirrel |
| Birds | swan, crane, swallow, parrot, ostrich, flamingo, rooster, duck, eagle, hummingbird |
| Sea animals | fish, shark, whale, dolphin, seal, crab, turtle, seahorse, jellyfish, starfish |
The object cards ask “What is it?” under the name, and the animal cards say build the animal, the bird or the creature.
Pieces and printing
The cut-out page prints the set as a 150 mm square with a 10 cm line for checking the scale. The shapes on the cards are drawn smaller than that set, so children build beside the card. The page itself suggests gluing it to card stock before cutting. The saver file is laid out on A4. Its first 80 pages give every challenge card as an outline, and the last 40 pages fit an easy card and a challenge card for two shapes on each sheet.
