Make 24 sits at the center of Number Quest: four numbers, the four operations and brackets, and one target. The cards for 2, 2, 6 and 8 or 1, 5, 5 and 5 all have the same goal, and the answer guide shows one way to reach 24 for each, broken into steps.

Make 24 is one of four games in the set. The other three are sudoku (4 by 4, 6 by 6 and 9 by 9), number mazes where you start at a flag and may only step to the number that follows the rule, such as plus 3 or times 2, to see which star you reach, and Math Brain Lab cards with missing numbers, patterns, comparisons, “what number am I?” clues and symbol riddles.

Levels and points

Every card has a level badge. Starter cards (a circle, 1 point) are aimed at ages 7–8, Challenger cards (a diamond, 2 points) at 8–10, and Master cards (a star, 3 points) at 10–12. The quest map numbers all 60 cards in play order, so cards 1–20 are all Starter, 21–40 Challenger and 41–60 Master, with the four games taking turns. Solving before your timer card runs out earns one extra point.

Every three cards solved in a game fills one star in the passport. With all 20 stars you face the final challenge: one puzzle from each game, each giving one digit of a four-digit code that opens the Number Vault.

Playing alone or together

Solo, you pick five cards, set a timer and try to beat your best score. Two players race on the same card, and the first correct answer takes the round. Three or four players can work one card together and agree on a single answer. The parent and teacher guide adds ideas for a classroom, such as one game per table in math centers, and ways to make it easier (drop the timer, start with 4 by 4 sudoku) or harder (find two different ways to make 24).

Printing

Print at actual size and each card comes out at 4 x 6 inches, two to a landscape page with small corner marks for cutting. Cardstock between 65 and 80 lb makes the cards sturdier. If you print the card back page on the reverse, it lines up whichever way your printer flips the paper. Laminate the cards and the number board, or slip them into dry-erase pockets, to use them again with a marker.

Questions

Do the Make 24 cards ever need fractions?
Only two of them. Both are Master-level cards and are marked Fractions Allowed. Every other Make 24 card, and every set in the speed round, works with whole numbers.
Can I print it without a lot of color ink?
Yes. The ink-saving files have the same 74 pages with white backgrounds, light gray grids and black text.
