Mix & Mingle gives a room of adults three card and paper games for breaking the ice, plus a bonus trivia quiz. Everything is set in large, high-contrast type, so the cards can be read across a table without anyone leaning in. It suits a group of strangers as well as a table of old friends or three generations of one family.

Three games and a quiz

Finish the Phrase. Twenty blue cards, each with a well-known saying cut short: “Better late than ,” “When in Rome, do as the Romans .” Draw a card, read it out, and the first person to finish it keeps the card. The answer key allows for sayings with more than one common ending.

Remember When? A 20-line checklist of things people may have done, from turning the dial on a rotary telephone to watching the first moon landing live. Everyone checks off what they’ve done, counts up, then picks one checked line and tells the story behind it. As the page puts it, the stories are the point.

Conversation Starters. Forty cards in four color groups. Growing Up covers favorite toys and teachers, Everyday Joys covers hobbies and comfort food, Looking Back covers first jobs and old songs, and Heart & Mind asks gentler questions such as “What is the best advice you have ever been given?” There’s no winner here. Players answer their own card and anyone else can follow.

Classic Trivia Quiz. Twenty general-knowledge questions, from the capital of France to which car maker introduced the Mustang in 1964. Play it alone or in teams of three.

Hosting

The host guide offers three styles of play: everyone answers in turn (best for four to eight people), teams that confer (for bigger, noisier rooms), or “share a memory,” where each answer leads to a story. It suggests seating strangers side by side, reading the first card yourself, and stopping after about twenty minutes while people still want more. A separate note for care homes and day centers suggests printing the checklist and quiz single-sided on plain paper and reading cards aloud for the group.

Printing

Plain paper works, and card stock makes the cards last longer. You’ll need scissors or a paper trimmer for the two card games. The card backs are optional and go on the reverse side. Print at 100%, and choose the ink-saver files for a grayscale version.

Questions

How large is the print on the cards?
The words on each card are set at about 19 to 24 point, with four cards to a US Letter or A4 page. The checklist and quiz sheets use 14-point type.
Does anyone get knocked out?
No. The host guide says passing is always allowed, and the conversation cards have no winner at all.
