These pumpkin carving stencils are all black cats, forty of them, and they get harder as the numbers go up. Each page is pure black and white: the black areas are what you cut away, and the white areas, including the thin white gaps that break up each shape, stay on the pumpkin to hold it together.

Four levels

  • Easy, CAT 01 to 10. Big single silhouettes, such as a sitting cat, a cat face, a stretching cat and a cat curled asleep inside a circle.
  • Cute, CAT 11 to 20. Cats with props: a witch hat, a broom, a cauldron, candy, a bow, a lantern and a carved jack-o’-lantern.
  • Spooky, CAT 21 to 30. An arched-back cat, a fanged cat face, a cat with a raven, cats among tombstones, at a gothic window and in a thorny forest.
  • Advanced, CAT 31 to 40. Full scenes with more openings to plan, such as a witch cat in an apothecary, a cat on a witch tower, two cats under a crescent moon and a cat coven at midnight.

The book is clear that the level is about how many cuts and supports a design has, not how long it takes.

Cut map and trace outline

Every design appears in two books with the same number. The main book shows it filled in black, labeled “Black = remove / White = keep”. The outline book shows the same shape as thin lines, which are easier to follow when you prick or trace the pattern onto the pumpkin. Trace both edges of every outlined area. Where an outline is broken, the break is a support, and joining it up would let a piece fall out.

The main book opens with a picture index of all 40 cats, a five-step method, a size page that matches designs to pumpkins of about 6 to 8, 8 to 10 and 10 to 14 inches, and a safety page.

Carving safely

The included guide asks that an adult does all the cutting with sharp tools, while children help choose a design and tape the paper on. It also recommends working on a dry, sturdy table, keeping hands out of the cutting path, and using a battery LED candle rather than a flame, and it says never to leave a lit pumpkin unattended. The guide’s other pages cover choosing a firm pumpkin with a broad face, cutting small inner openings before large outer ones, and a fill-in carving plan.

Printing

Print the page for your design on US Letter or A4 at 100% with borderless printing off, then measure the 1-inch line at the bottom before you tape it on.

Questions

Which design should a first-timer start with?
Pick from CAT 01 to CAT 10, the Easy level, which uses large shapes and little detail. The stencil book suggests CAT 06 or CAT 10 for a small pumpkin of about 6 to 8 inches.
Can I shrink a design for a smaller pumpkin?
Yes, but check the white bridges after scaling. The guide asks for bridges at least 3/16 inch wide, and suggests a larger pumpkin rather than shrinking a detailed scene.
