Brain Adventure is a 40-page set of 32 brain teaser worksheets, and no two of them are the same task. They sit in four zones of eight, each zone built around one skill. The cover gives the age range as 4 to 8.
The four zones
- Star Quest is about following with the eyes: tracing paths, finding the matching shape, spotting six differences, a maze, a dot-to-dot, copying a grid pattern and hunting for hidden keys.
- Forest Trek gets both hands working together. Kids trace with a pencil in each hand, draw the missing half of a picture, clap out left-right rhythms and do one whole page with the hand they don’t usually write with. One page, Cross-Body Moves, gets them away from the table altogether.
- Volcano Dash is small-muscle work: tracing shapes, cutting straight, wavy and zigzag lines, putting a dot in circles that get smaller, folding paper strips into fans and pushing a pin through a dotted star.
- Magic Castle is logic: what comes next, odd one out, sorting by size, a four-shape sudoku, a small logic grid about which of three kids packed which item, and a code to turn back into words.
What to have ready
Each page has a strip that names its goal, a time of 5, 10 or 15 minutes and the gear. Most need only a pencil. The exceptions are two pencils for the two-handed pages, crayons or markers for three pages, a ruler for connect-the-dots, safety scissors for the cutting page, and a push pin with a cork mat for the hole-punching page, which the page itself marks for grown-up help. A short tip for the adult sits at the foot of every activity.
Color or ink-saver
The ink-saver files are the same 40 pages with the color fills taken out, for when the color ink is low or the printer is black and white. The book suggests 120 gsm paper or heavier, since the pages get crayons, erasing and pinholes. Print at actual size so the tracing lines keep their spacing.
