This printable activity book ties letter practice to whatever is passing the car window. The cover and the printing guide mark it for ages 3 to 6. According to the guide, no page expects a child to read a sentence alone, so an adult reads the short instruction out loud and the child does the looking, checking and drawing.

Seven parts, in the order of a trip

The book follows a trip from start to finish. It opens with four pages to fill in before leaving: where you are going, a packing list, six car rules, and a travel passport with a stamp circle for each of six days. Then come the alphabet pages, the spotting hunts, two sets of games and a few pages for drawing. The last four pages look back on the trip: a favorite part, a favorite thing seen, a star-rating trip review, and a certificate with a space for the child’s name.

Letters out the window

After an A to Z grid to check off, five pages go through the alphabet a few letters at a time, each letter paired with something you could really see from the road: a bus for B, a gas station for G, a mailbox for M, a stop sign for S. The tricky letters get a hint, such as finding a Q on a sign or looking for anything shaped like an X.

The next pages move from spotting to sounds. A child circles the first letter of a pictured word, fills in missing letters on an alphabet road, and traces lowercase partners for A to H.

Which pages for which age

The printing guide splits the book by age. Three- and four-year-olds can do everything that is checking, circling, counting, coloring or drawing: the hunts, the I Spy scene, the bingo cards and all the creative pages. Five- and six-year-olds can add the beginning sounds, the missing letters, the alphabet road, uppercase and lowercase, and the writing lines.

Games for the back seat

Alphabet bingo is a five-by-five card with a free space, and picture bingo swaps the letters for small drawings. Other pages include a letter maze from A to Z, a parking lot where each car drives to its matching letter, car color bingo, would you rather, road trip trivia and a count-the-cars scene. Two pages send kids hunting for letters and place names on the plates of other cars, and another lets them design a plate of their own.

Printing tips

The guide suggests one clipboard per child for the bingo pages, and a clear sleeve with a dry-erase marker for pages you want to reuse. The ten hunt pages work on their own if you don’t want to print the whole book. Heavier paper, around 100 to 120 gsm, is nicer to use with felt-tip markers.

Questions

Does my child need to read?
No. The printing guide says no page asks a child to read a sentence alone. An adult can read the instructions out loud.
What is the ink saver version?
The same 52 pages with the background colors and fills removed, leaving outline pictures on white. It uses far less ink, and children can color the pictures themselves.
