Each of these 60 printable shape flashcards fills a whole page, and the four sections of 15 build on each other. The parent guide puts it at ages 4 to 7 and suggests younger children start with the first section alone.
The four sections
- 2D shapes. Circle to parallelogram, including the octagon, crescent and semicircle. Each card counts the sides and corners and names an everyday thing with the same shape, like a stop sign or a honeycomb.
- 3D shapes. Ten solids from sphere and cube to torus and hemisphere, then five cards that ask the harder questions: which one is flat, which can roll, which has no flat faces at all.
- Symmetry and mirrors. Find the fold line, draw the missing half, and tell a mirror image from a shape that has only been turned. The guide calls that last one the most common mix-up.
- Spatial reasoning. Twelve position words, from above and below to in front of and behind, each shown with a ball, a cat, a bear or a rabbit, and three clue cards to finish.
Every card carries a level mark: 24 are Level 1 (recognize), 27 are Level 2 (observe) and 9 are Level 3 (think). The answers for the question cards are in the separate key.
More to do with shapes
Ten shape puzzles show a robot, a boat, an ice cream and other pictures built from simple shapes, and children check off the shapes they can spot. Five shape hunt sheets ask them to circle every circle, triangle, square, rectangle or 3D shape on the page. There’s also a printable tangram with ten figures to build from all seven pieces, from a cat to a runner.
The guide
Six short pages cover the order to use the sections in, what to ask for each topic and a few activities away from the cards: a shape walk, a roll test down a sloped book, a paint blot for symmetry, and a barrier game with blocks for position words.
Printing
Print the cards on cardstock at 100% and cut along the rounded frame. The tangram has to print at full size or the seven pieces won’t fit back into the square. Laminated Level 2 and 3 cards work with a dry-erase pen.
Questions
- Are all the files in A4?
- The 60 cards come in both US Letter and A4. The answer key, puzzles, shape hunts, tangram pages and guides are in US Letter only.
- Can I print it in black and white?
- The printing guide says the cards read fine in grayscale, and the tangram has its own black and white page.
